چکیده

Soil in laboratory microcosm experiments was amended with dried and milled crop residue of onion (Allium cepa L. cv. Mission) or garlic (A. sativa L. cv. California Early). The amend ments, along with the additional factors of amendment concentration (0, 1 or 3% (w/w)) an soil temperature (23 or 39 8C), were evaluated with respect to germination of seeds of th weedy annual plants Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv. (barnyardgrass), Portulaca oleracea (common purslane), Sisymbrium irio L. (London rocket) and Solanum nigrum L. (black nigh shade). Deleterious effects of seed exposure to 39 8C versus 23 8C were demonstrated i ECHCG, POROL, and SSYIR; and to increasing amendment concentration and the [concen tration temperature] interaction in all four plant species tested (P < 0.05). The effect o garlic versus onion amendment was significant only in SOLNI, where garlic residue demonstrated more herbistatic and/or herbicidal activity. The results of these experimen showed that the garlic and onion plant residues were capable of causing significan reductions in seed germination during their decomposition in soil, but only at elevate (39 8C versus 23 8C) soil temperature. At the agricultural level, activity of these residues coul be exploited as a component of integrated weed management using appropriate cro sequencing, and may extend utility of soil heating treatments (e.g. solarization) for wee control to cooler climates or seasons, or for shorter treatment durations. # 2007 Elsevier B.V. Effects of water deficit and salinity on germination properties of Aeluropus spp.

Abstract Seed germination is an important phase of plant development during which soil water availability is crucial. Salinity can affect seed germination in two ways: 1) Change of osmotic potential of available water, 2) toxicity effects. In this experiment, interactive effects of salinity and water deficit on germination criteria of two species of A, littoralis and A. logopoides were...

Weedy Adaptation in Setaria spp.: VI. S. faberi Seed hull shape as soil germination signal antenna

Ecological selection forces for weedy and domesticated traits have influenced the evolution of seed shape in Setaria resulting in similarity in seed shape that reflects similarity in ecological function rather than reflecting phylogenetic relatedness. Seeds from two diploid subspecies of Setaria viridis, consisting of one weedy subspecies and two races of the domesticated subspecies, and four o...

Investigating Allelopathic Effects of Artemisia sieberi on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth Indices of Three Alfalfa Species

Allelopathy is one of the main factors limiting the plants growth. The present study investigated the effect of aqueous extract of leaves and fruit of Artemisia sieberi that is an important species for rangeland rehabilitation on seed germination and seedling growth of three alfalfa species (Medicago sativa cv. Nikshahri,‌ Medicago polymorpha and Medicago scutellata cv. Robinson) in laboratory ...

INHIBITORY EFFECTS OF WILD BARLEY (HORDEUM SPONTANEUM Koch.) RESIDUES ON GERMINATION AND SEEDLING GROWTH OF WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUM L.) AND ITS OWN PLANT

Laboratory studies were conducted to examine the effects of different concentrations of wild barley (Hordeum spontaneum Koch.) shoot and seed extracts on germination and seedling growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and wild barley. In this study, all wild barley shoot extract concentrations (with exception of lowest concentration) significantly reduced wheat seed germination after 7 days. Sh...

Weedy adaptation in Setaria spp. V. Effects of gaseous environment on giant foxtail (Setaria faberii) (Poaceae) seed germination.

The effects that naturally occurring gases (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide) may cause in dormant giant foxtail (Setaria faberii) seed germination under favorable temperature and moisture conditions were investigated. The germination responses to gas mixtures supported the hypothesis that S. faberii germination behavior is regulated by the amount of oxygen taken into hydrated seed over time. ...
